The Year of the Internet Show
If 2009 was any indication, I think 2010 will be the year of the Internet TV show. A lot of the tricks network and cable TV are trying to pull on content producers; pay problems, restricting shows to a proven formula, canceling good shows if they don't have blockbuster numbers; will come back to haunt them. 2009 proved that there is not only an audience online, but a revenue stream as well. When you deliver content straight to your fans, the fans will respond by supporting your efforts.
I think that Internet shows are currently just squeaking by, but that's only because the audience is still small. The fact that many of them can break even and actually make a living off of their online content proves that there's a lot of room for growth here. Sites like Hulu and iTunes, which have TV and Internet only content available, will slowly grow this audience past it's current geek only viewership.
Here are some of the shows I've been watching and I expect will spawn the next generation of great stuff online:
- Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog - This was a big sensation of 2009, written and produced by Joss Whedon and staring Neal Patrick Harris, Felicia Day and Nathan Fillion. Heck, it even won an Emmy. It's no longer available on Hulu, but you can buy it from iTunes or get the DVD at Amazon. The second installment is in production now.
- The Guild - The Guild is a continuing story of six rather strange MMO players who decide to meet up in real life. The characters really make this show and if you're a fan of goofy, off-the-wall sitcoms, this will be right up your alley. The first two seasons are on YouTube and season three is on Microsoft's atrocious bing.com. Can't win 'em all.
- Sita Sings The Blues - This is a musical, animated telling of the Ramayana. It actually has two story lines, the following of the author's tragic, romantic journey interspersed with stories concerning Sita, the wife of Rama and the love story between each of them. It's actually a very fun film and Nina Paley, the creator, released the whole thing under the creative commons license. You can watch the whole one and half hour Sita Sings the Blues on YouTube. I would advise skipping the intermission, but that could just be me.
- Tiki Bar TV - This is a show that you can only get into if you like the absurdly silly, especially if it's drunk. It's sort of a sitcom but really more of an improv skit comedy show centered around the adventures of a cocktail bar and it's insane patrons. Every episode has a cocktail recipe so you can even drink along, which will probably make the show that much better. If Tiki Bar TV makes a joke and there's no one drunk to hear it, is it still funny? You'll have to watch to find out.
I know a lot of people who won't watch content like this unless they can watch it on their TVs. I, frankly, agree which is why I'm either going to get a Neuros Link or the soon-to-be Boxee Box from DLink. I have yet to decide on this, but there's just too much good stuff online not to get a device that let's you watch it all in your living room.
