Things I Do Understand
I just read a post on Seth Godin's blog called Things you don't understand and it got me thinking about what I've been doing over the past couple years with my experiments on the internet. I've done a lot of things lately that were just one off projects, just to investigate what's possible on the internet. I really think I've learned a lot from it. So here are some things I do understand:
- How Google AdSense works
- How to typeset a book
- How to make a podcast
- How to build a community
- How to write a book
- How to ensure my data won't be lost
The above are the most relevant to me at this point in time, although I didn't know that when I learned them. I think it's important, as Seth says, to just learning things that interest you in the moment. It's become so cheap and easy and you never know when it'll all come together into something really cool. I also learned about selling on eBay, Craigslist, and Amazon, how LinkedIn really works for you, why the cool kids like Facebook and why I don't.
With all of this, there's still things I don't know. This is what I hope to find out in the coming year:
- How to edit a book for publication
- What self-publishing means in the age of the internet
- What makes a successful open source project
- How to do public speaking right
And most importantly,
- When I can do anything, how do I make sure I'm doing the right thing?
- Of everything I can do, what makes me happiest?
I might just have to write a blog post on each of these topics.
