TrueCrypt 5.0, Now for the Mac!
I've been telling you to get this and that lately. But now I've got another one for you, and it's free!
TrueCrypt is a little app that allows you to create encrypted file volumes to store your sensitive documents in. I've been using this for a number of years to store my passwords file (allows me to have super secure passwords for all my websites without me having to remember them all the time) and other financial stuff. So what you do is create a secure virtual filesystem of, say, 64 MB and then you can mount it as a drive on your computer. When you're done, unmount it and everything is securely locked away. It's very easy to use and the defaults are all you really need. And the guys that built this are super security conscious, so they know what they're doing.
What's exciting about version 5 is that it's now available on Windows, Linux and Mac, which means you can send these to friends and family and they'll be able to open them with the right password! This is great for legal documents or anything that you wouldn't want someone to see without permission. Remember, all your email is sent in the clear and anyone along the way can read it. I know, I used to work at an ISP.
