Ubuntu Breezy Badger on Averatec 3250H1

After much searching and hunting and not finding, I have discovered the perfect Linux distro for my Averatec 3250H1 laptop, Ubuntu's Breezy Badger. Everything just works. Closing the lid locks the screen, hibernating works and resumes with ACPI turned on with the fan working properly, and the right drivers installed for the rt2500 wireless card. Yes, folks, this is the one. And I'm willing to go GNOME for something that just works.

One thing. If you're going to use WPA for the wireless, you do need to install the RaConfig2500 tool.

  1. Install kdebase using Synaptic (In the System Menu at the top)
  2. Download my precompiled RaConfig2500? (If this doesn't work, let me know) or compile your own.
  3. Have fun!

Once you connect, you may need to sudo dhclient ra0, but that's not that big of a deal. After you run it the first time, it happens automatically on start up.

I've been waiting months for this. I'm now an official Ubuntu fan, sorry Mepis.

Hey ... just stumbled across this site and I'm trying to get Ubuntu installed on my wife's 3220hs. Where is this preconfigured raconfig2500 file mentioned at the top of this page? Dead link ... anyway I'm searching elsewhere for it but if anyone knows its whereabouts or has a working copy, please post a link. Thanks a bunch and I'm ready to ditch Windows completely.

This computer has finally died. It's AC power connection is gone and can no longer power up or charge the battery. I may get in there and solder the thing, but I'll probably just toss it.

I have an Averatec 3200 series as well. Great stuff. 2 things:

Does your suspend still work? Still using Ubuntu? When I resume from suspending, it just hard reboots. You don't seem to have that issue..

I got this laptop about 3.5 years ago and so the battery is 3.5 years old. But I still get 1.5-2 hours life out of it. How? Well, most all the time I don't need the battery, so I leave the battery detached, and at about 40% charge level. This causes it to age much more slowly. You can also store the battery fully charged, but someplace cold, like your refrigerator.

I was using Dapper on my Averetec and I was using an external card for wireless because the whole system would freeze when I tried to configure the internal wireless network card. I am now running Edgy and do not have a problem. You have to activate the card once you install the OS, but it runs perfectly.

Comment on battery life...it is an older battery, but I get roughly 4 minutes of time (no joke).

Ubuntu is certainly the way to go.
  • heyas all.
my 40 gig drive is going to good use now. I have installed UBUNTU and have ordered KUBUNTU.
I dont know how to install the driver for my ati radeon 9600xt.
Actually i dont know if i am meant to be downloading and installing XFREE86 or the XORG version of the driver. I am downloading them both but i dont know how to do anything in Linux really.
I dont know where I am meant to set up my modem or set up a net account. (no INETWIZ.EXE)
So yeah, can someone help me out with getting my ATI driver installed?
and does anyone know of a good long PDF file i can read and wrap my brain around.
I'm still a Windows user, but I want to use Linux as much as possible.
    Thanks. :)

"I’m willing to go GNOME for something that just works."

"Install kdebase using Synaptic (In the System Menu at the top)"

if you want kde, us Kubuntu- it is ubuntu with kde installed and configured. It has some advantages over just installing kdebase- it includes adept, is nicely configured, includes funnel searching in konqueror (a la OSX).

You can download (or order) a Kubuntu CD

or you can just do "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop"

    Goforth-

I ran into this problem a couple of weeks ago and forgot to post it. Sorry!

I am also installing linux on my averatec, and I was wondering if you had any trouble with the USB ports. I am definitly a newbie, but while the device manager shows them, they will not reckognize a usb mouse or mass storage devices.
    Thanks

I actually haven't messed with the ethernet card in Dapper. I seem to remember it working in Breezy but I don't know if it's broke or not in Dapper. I did have trouble with the wireless card though. Whenever I started it up, my system froze. I got that straightened out by editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and setting:

    Section "Device"
Identifier "VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8378 [S3 UniChrome] $
    Driver "via"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    Option "DisableIRQ" "true"
    EndSection

Don't know why this worked, but it did. You might want to try the same thing for the ethernet card. The above should work for your wireless card in Dapper.

I have the same laptop. I'm a newbie so was wondering how do you configure the built in ethernet card? I'm using dapper 6.06 and can't seem to get online using the wired card. I haven't even tried to set up the builtin wireless yet but any help you could offer on both would be great. I am a newbie for sure. Congrats on your baby girl!

I have the averatec Av3250H1 and I am using ubuntu Live CD 5.10. WHen I am going to system --> network then I am able to see all the access point and I choose mine belkin54g and choose DHCP and activated that but when looking on ifconfig it is not returning me IP address. Please let me know if anyone has solution for this

I have tried Debian unsuccesfully for my Averatec. Looking at Ubuntu independently I decided to migrate over during this Winter brake 2005. After reading your blog I am very happy to see you are more than satisfied with Ubuntu.

No joke, two and a half hours. The fan and processor are throttled out of the box. With Mepis I had to install a bunch of other apps to get that to work.

And it goes into a low power sleep when not used for a while.

And hibernating works so you can quickly turn it off and back on when needed.

If you're looking for a cheap, light, long-lasting battery laptop, I'd recommend it.
  • I've been an Ubuntu fan for awhile (using it on a Dell desktop for about six months), but your post has me thinking it would be cool to get an Averatec too! Any idea what the battery life is while running this distro?
  • I finally got my Breezy problems worked out as well. I've been an Ubuntu fan since day 1, and this release sets the bar again. Welcome to the group!
