TiddlyWiki – The Ultimate Notebook

This is by far the biggest thing to happen since Google. TiddlyWiki!

At first the concept is hard to grasp since it's just a web page and what can a single web page do? Trust me on this.

While on this page, go to File > Save as... and save it to your drive. Open that file up in a browser (preferably FireFox), click options and turn on AutoSave and turn off SaveBackups. Then ...

Create!

You now have a fully linked notebook that lives in one small, little file. There's a lot to learn here but if you know wiki basics, you'll be able to pick this up really fast. If not here's a couple entires to get you moving.

Because it's HTML you can version control it, email it, grep it, diff it, whatever. Text in a flat file is a lot more powerful than it being stuck in a database because you can mess with text however you want.

The reason I say this is as big as Google is not because of TiddlyWiki's impending IPO. It's because I see a lot of potential with this style of programming; a full fledged application that lives in an HTML file and runs in a browser. It's like Google Maps, but local. One HTML file is a GUI, app logic and database all in one. Imagine a calendar app, address book, blog, and email app all as simple (looking) HTML files that you carry around on your USB thumb drive. I get shivers just thinking about it.

I can't wait to see what comes out of this. I think this is the next thing I'm going to get into learning too. I can't wait.

At least it will get me posting again.

Special thanks to Alan for pointing this gem out to me.
