The Garden
This year I decided to plant a garden in my backyard. After being introduced to Newman's Own dressing, I knew that one of the vegetables to be grown would have to be lettuce. I bought a couple of varieties and I've planted them recently.
Lettuce is a cold climate plant, so I've decided to start them early. The temperatures here in Akron, Ohio get to be around 90 during the summer and lettuce has a hard time growing at those tempatures. My tomatoes and peppers will love it then, but that's another story.
The good thing is, right now it's rainy and freezing here (~30 at night) which ends up being perfect weather for lettuce. I planted two, 7 foot rows of Blackseeded Simpson about a month ago and recently planted a row of Romaine. The Simpson is coming along nicely and if I stagger planting throughout the spring, I should be able to get fresh salads for months. I might even be able to plant Oakleaf Lettuce later on, as it's more heat tolerant.
If only I could get lettuce and cherry tomatoes growing at the same time. I could have a full on salad extravaganza.
